DECEMBER 1, 1997:  All of Hollywood is abuzz these days over the news that Princess Diana was thinking of starring in a sequel to The Bodyguard with Kevin Costner. Costner says he was in negotiations with Diana, and a script was being worked up. Thank goodness we've all been spared the embarrassment of watching that particular trainwreck. If you're interested, Costner is spilling his guts in the January edition of Premiere magazine. ... Dried-up comedian Jerry Lewis is making a pretty penny these days selling his old comedies to idea-starved studios. Since The Nutty Professor became a hit with Eddie Murphy, Lewis has inked deals to remake several of his films including The Errand Boy and The Bellboy. Bellboy was just snapped up by MGM last week. The studio already has a star in mind, but they aren't saying who. The original tale was set in Miami's Fountainbleau Hotel, but the remake will be moved to (surprise, surprise) the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. What studios seem to be forgetting, though, is that The Nutty Professor actually had a plot. The Errand Boy and The Bellboy were both wordless snippets of sketch comedy loosely strung together by Lewis. I'm not too sure what the point of remaking them is. Of course, that isn't stopping the Hollywood remake machine. Robin Williams just showed up in Flubber; Eddie Murphy is out shooting Dr. Dolittle, and Jim Carrey is being talked into a redux of The Incredible Mr. Limpet.
