"Kurt & Courtney." By Sam Weller JUNE 8, 1998: Conspiracies are cool. The government snuffed JFK. Area 51's got a saucer, no doubt. I'll buy it all. But the premise of the docu-joke "Kurt and Courtney" that Courtney Love, wife of Nirvana front man Kurt Cobain, hired someone to take out her grunge-hubby just doesn't cut the mustard. Undoubtedly, publicity surrounding this documentary's legal dilemma in securing rights to Love-controlled music will attract attention, but even still, it is a disappointing effort from Brit director Nick Broomfield, who has produced well-received documentaries about Margaret Thatcher, serial killer Aileen Wuornos and Hollywood Madam Heidi Fleiss. Broomfield usually does things using far less cliched conventions. Without a rock-solid thesis, "Kurt and Courtney," while entertaining, leads nowhere and ends up not even smelling as good as teen spirit. (Sam Weller)
