"Zero Effect" is a gentle parody of noir detective movies and their devices. It floats on the basis of its dialogue, which is goofy rather than witty, and on the performances of its principal actors. [7]

Volume I, Issue 37
February 16 - February 23, 1998

I   can be quite a hard-ass when it comes to movies, so for a change I'd like tell you about two recent flicks I honestly enjoyed.

First off, if you're in the new release section of your local video store, don't hesitate to rent "Love Serenade" (reviewed here). It's a small Australian film with a humorous, quirky feel not unlike "Muriel's Wedding" -- but there are dark, almost Lynchian undercurrents as well. Hollywood has no idea how to sustain intelligent weirdness the way "Love Serenade" does. I loved it.

Hollywood does know how to make a movie like "The Wedding Singer," and surprisingly, I loved it too. Whereas "Love Serenade" has a bit o' fun with '70s music, "The Wedding Singer" is steeped beyond recognition in '80s retro. Fortunately I'm a sucker for that sort of thing. What's most remarkable about "The Wedding Singer," though, is that it compelled me to let go of past irritations and actually like Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore (whose palpable cuteness is in full effect in this brief chat). Sure, the picture heads in all the predictable directions, but it has a ton of fun along the way, and its romance story clicks. I felt a lump in my throat when Billy Idol....well, you'll see.

Speaking of retro, a lot of people have a love affair with the medieval retro of "Xena: Warrior Princess." But in all fairness, it's Xena's sidekick, Gabrielle, who anchors the show. She's the one people relate to; nobody could hope to be as kick-ass as Xena. So it's only fitting that actress Reneé O'Connor now has her own fan club. Want to join?

There's plenty more retro where that came from. We got presidential-movie retro, we got film noir retro, we even got Mister Rogers retro (or should I say "meow meow Mister Rogers retro meow"?). Then, of course, there are the reviews... There's always the reviews.
