Kiss or Kill is the Australian import written and directed by
Bill Bennett and starring Matt Day and Frances OConnor as two
grifters who go on the lam after one of their marks dies.
Nikki (OConnor) and Al (Day) are doomed lovers. Nikki is an orphan
who witnessed her mothers murder, while Al has been disowned
by his well-to-do father. They hook up as teens after meeting
in juvenile detention and begin a crime spree. Their m.o. is to
have Nikki lure married traveling businessmen back to their hotel
rooms, spike their drinks, then rob them. Their plan backfires,
however, when one of the men ODs. They take his things anyway
and discover that he has in his possession a videotape of a prominent
former sports star named Zipper Doyle (Barry Langrishe) performing
an unspeakable act with a young boy. They hit the road with the
cops and Zipper on their tail.
As they make their way across the country, the body count goes
up and Nikki and Al suspect each other. Nikki sleepwalks, taking
up knives and gasoline and matches; Al, too, has mysterious disappearances.
Bennett has produced a swell but modest black comedy that is helped
by its stars, particularly OConnor, who fills the screen with
her deadly charm. Kiss or Kill does suffer from choppy editing,
which is supposed to give the film an edgy, arty film. What is
does is give you a headache, but its worth a couple of aspirin.
