Shallow Grave

Weekly Alibi

DIRECTED BY: Danny Boyle

REVIEWED: 06-06-97

Excuse me while I let my petty jealousy outta the cage here, but this guy Ewan McGregor, I mean, c'mon. First we see him in this flick wandering around in his boxer briefs, eatin' breakfast cereal, then Trainspotting comes along and his wiener makes an appearance, and now I understand that in his new movie, not only is his schween on view for two-thirds of the running time, but it's painted up like a five-dollar crackwhore. And the girls go wild for the guy! Let me run around in my skivvies talking about heroin and sex in a thick Scottish burr, and you know what happens? Jack shit, buddy! I mean, have you ever had to hide a magazine from someone because she's threatening to lick the cover? And as if that weren't enough, Shallow Grave is one of the best damn movies I've seen in a long time, which pisses me off all the more. Ewan is one of three roommates looking for someone to rent their fourth bedroom, and when their mysterious new tenant commits suicide, things quickly go to hell. I'm not gonna spoil a second of it for you here, 'cause it's too much fun watching things unfold--suffice it to say that Danny (Trainspotting) Boyle's direction is terrific and all the actors are superb, Ewan especially, the bastard. I'll get him someday. (Polygram Video)
