Fargo

Weekly Alibi

DIRECTED BY: Joel Coen

REVIEWED: 01-08-97

In early '96, the Coen brothers delivered their most darkly humorous and, at the same time, most accessible film ever. This tale of murder in the icy northwest was the flipside of Lone Star's arid environs. Everyone says Francis McDormand will get nominated for her performance as the pregnant but dogged sheriff. She will, but let's give credit where credit is due: William Macy buoyed this entire film with his perfect performance as the world's most pathetic loser. Expect many Oscar nominations here and an absolute lock for the crystal clear cinematography.
